Introduction

The Joint Indo-German Academy towards Sustainability in Engineering, Education and Entrepreneurship (JInGAS) deepens the long-standing cooperation of BITS Pilani and TU Braunschweig. Sponsored by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the project develops joint education formats on the topics of sustainability and Industry 4.0 in engineering as well as education and entrepreneurship. Over the project duration of 4 years, the exchange of scientists and students will be promoted. The core of the exchange is the follow-up and extension of the seminar “Indo-German Challenge for Sustainable Production”. Awareness of global sustainability challenges will be raised and the network of partners from science and industry will be consolidated and expanded.

The Seminar: Tackling global challenges together!

Whether global pandemic or climate change, the challenges of our time can only be overcome together. From October 2020 to January 2021 students from BITS Pilani and TU Braunschweig will work in binational teams on various concepts and technical applications in the context of Sustainable Manufacturing and Industry 4.0. Four students each will work virtually together on the topics:

  • Sustainable and energy-efficient manufacturing
  • Live-LCA in manufacturing
  • Mixed reality for more energy-efficient production
  • Blockchain for more sustainable distributed production & product life cycles
  • International Entrepreneurship

This includes the use of IoT technologies and programming prototypical applications for data processing and visualization. The learning infrastructure at BITS Pilani and the Institute of Machine Tools and Production Technology including various technical devices is available for the implementation and testing of the ideas.

The team work is central element of the seminar. It will be embedded in a set of activities. Lectures will provide the necessary background knowledge. Team building activities will strengthen team work and cultural understanding. In a regular meeting, called “Chai break session“, the groups will have the chance to present their interim results to the others and receive feedback. Final results will be presented by each group in January 2021.

Due to COVID-19 pandemic the seminar will be hold on virtual basis in 2020. BITS Pilani and TU Braunschweig will provide comprehensive digital infrastructure to enable a successful exchange of the participants.

Application

The funding of the DAAD only allows 10 students from each side to participate in the seminar. For further information on the organisation, please contact Maximilian Rolinck.

Students from BITS Pilani are kindly asked to send a CV of one page and a further letter of motivation (max. 500 words) as PDF to Mr. Rishi Kumar until 20 July 2020 25 August 2020 by 5pm IST. The letter of motivation should state three preferred topics out of the five themes presented above.

Students from Technische Universit├Ąt Braunschweig are kindly asked to send a letter of motivation (max. 1 page DIN A4) to Maximilian Rolinck until 23 August 2020, stating three thematic preferences. There are still places available! Applications will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. The seminar is an elective course and will be credited for all master programs of the faculty of mechanical engineering (“Wahlbereich”) as well as for the master program in environmental engineering (“Vertiefungsfach: Environmental Sustainability and Life Cycle Engineering”). Students from these programs are awarded 5 CPs for participation. Evaluation will be based on presentation and report (no exam!).
